Rowlandson

From "A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mary Rowlandson" Removes 1, 2, and 12.

  • I am surprised at the first remove. It does not sound exceptionally Puritan as I expected. She is quite focused most of the remove on her own discomfort, though towards the end she speaks of the brutality of Indians in general.
  • Well, she starts to sound more Puritan in the second remove, though I am still somewhat surprised at the amount of self pity. She has started to include lines like "But the Lord renewed my strength still, and carried me along, that I might see more of His power", but I'm still waiting for the "affliction is a gift from God" motif.
  • I'm intrigued by the Indian woman snatching the Bible away. My ignorance is showing here, but it makes me curious about when the Indians stopped trying to touch the Bible to gain power and started hating it.
